Why Does One Section of My Gutter Overflow Even Though It Looks Clean?

A gutter can appear clear from the ground and still overflow in one repeatable location. During heavy rain, one section of the gutter near the front corner of my house overflows while the rest of the gutter appears to drain normally.

I checked from the ground and do not see leaves or obvious debris, and the nearby downspout is releasing water. The overflow happens in roughly the same spot each time and leaves dark streaks on the fascia below it.

I have not noticed water entering the house or any ceiling stains. What should I check first, and how can I tell whether the problem is a partial blockage, poor gutter slope, a loose section, or simply too much roof runoff for the gutter to handle?

What to Check First From the Ground

Watch Where the Water Begins to Rise

During rain, observe whether the gutter fills for several feet before spilling or whether water immediately shoots over one short section.

A longer area of standing water may suggest slow drainage or poor slope. A concentrated sheet of water may point more toward roof runoff overwhelming that spot.

Watch the Downspout Discharge

Note whether the downspout produces a strong, steady flow or only a small stream while the gutter is overflowing.

What the Dark Fascia Streaks May Indicate

Dark streaking below the overflow shows that water repeatedly travels over or behind the gutter in the same general area. The staining can collect dirt and organic residue over time.

The streaks do not confirm that the fascia is structurally damaged. However, repeated wetting can eventually affect paint, wood, fasteners, and nearby exterior materials. The area should be checked for peeling paint, softness, swelling, separation, or persistent dampness.

What Not to Assume

Do not assume a clean-looking gutter is unobstructed.

A blockage may be hidden at the outlet, inside an elbow, or lower in the downspout.

Do not assume flowing water means the downspout is clear.

A partially restricted downspout can still release water while draining too slowly during heavy rain.

Do not assume the gutter is undersized first.

  • The gutter is visibly pulling away from the fascia.
